North, South, West and the suburbs

Chicagoans identify strongly with their side of town. Many people from the North Side lakefront neighbourhoods rarely go west of the river, and many suburbanites prefer not to come into the city at all. For a group drawn from different areas, downtown is the natural meeting point, with plenty of hotels and transit. For suburban groups, hotels near O'Hare, in Schaumburg or Oak Brook, are often easier, with simple parking and quieter weekends.

Winters that change plans

Chicago winters are long and harsh, with wind off Lake Michigan, snow, ice and days well below zero. Lake-effect snow can arrive suddenly. Practical steps:

• set a backup date for any meeting between December and March
• choose a venue close to an L station or with indoor parking
• agree that cancelling because of weather is nobody's fault
• make sure everyone can get home safely if conditions worsen

Hotels and condos

The Loop, River North, the Magnificent Mile and Streeterville have a deep supply of hotels, from large convention properties to boutique buildings. Prices rise sharply during big conventions at McCormick Place, Lollapalooza in early August, the marathon in October and major sports events. Ask about visitor policies, elevator access and room size. Condo buildings typically have doormen and strict association rules, and the city regulates short-term rentals, so many listings forbid gatherings. A neighbourhood bar, a hotel lounge in River North or a quiet café in the West Loop all make good introductions. Weeknight evenings are calmer than Friday or Saturday. Chicago is big, but professional circles in finance, law, healthcare and trading can be small, and many people grew up in the same parishes and neighbourhoods as their colleagues. Keep your face off your public photos, avoid views of recognisable buildings or the skyline from your window, and never mention your employer. Everything you learn about others stays private.

Wicker Park, Bucktown and Logan Square. Younger and creative, on the Blue line, with cocktail bars that suit a relaxed first drink.

The West Loop and Fulton Market. Restaurants, new hotels and converted warehouses, a short ride from the Loop.

Hyde Park and the South Side. Home to the University of Chicago and a strong local identity; quieter at night, with the Metra Electric and buses as the main links.

Indiana, Wisconsin and the wider region

Northwest Indiana is a short drive or South Shore Line ride away, and Milwaukee is about ninety minutes north by car or Amtrak. Some people deliberately meet across the state line for privacy, or choose a hotel in a suburb halfway between.
