If you live here, keep your standards the same for everyone, and do not be rushed by someone's flight time.

The Strip, Downtown and the suburbs

The Strip's resorts are enormous, busy around the clock and full of cameras, crowds and security. They are anonymous in one sense, as nobody notices one more group in a lift, but they are also loud, expensive at peak times and charge resort fees. Downtown, around Fremont Street, has older and smaller properties. Off-Strip and suburban hotels in Summerlin, Henderson and near the airport are calmer, cheaper and usually easier to park at.

Ask, before you book, about guest limits, how big the room really is and lift access: many resorts require a room key to reach the guest floors, and security staff may ask guests for ID.

The heat is serious

Summer daytime temperatures regularly exceed 40°C (104°F), and nights stay warm. Plan accordingly:

• choose a venue with strong, reliable air conditioning
• drink water steadily, especially if anyone has been drinking alcohol
• avoid long walks between resorts in the afternoon sun
• take more breaks than you would in a cooler city

Spring and autumn are far more comfortable. Winter nights can be surprisingly cold.

Getting around

The Strip is walkable in parts, but distances between resorts are longer than they look. The Monorail runs along the east side of the Strip, buses serve the main corridors, and taxis and rideshare are everywhere, with designated pickup areas at each resort. Locals mostly drive. Sort out every arrival and departure in advance, and never drive after drinking.

Rules in general terms

Nevada and Clark County have their own laws on adult businesses, and the rules in the county that contains Las Vegas differ from those in some rural counties. Do not let the city's reputation confuse you. Dating is about consenting adults meeting by mutual choice, with no money involved for sexual activity, and that applies here exactly as anywhere else. Drinks are everywhere, casinos are designed to blur time, and it is easy to lose track of how much anyone has had. Keep the introductory meeting sober or close to it, and agree beforehand that a participant who is visibly impaired sits the evening out. Consent must be clear and continuing, and that is impossible when judgement is clouded.

The Southern Nevada Health District runs a sexual health clinic offering testing and treatment, and community organisations and private providers also test and prescribe PrEP. Locals working in casinos and hotels often know staff across many properties, and the hospitality world here is smaller than it looks. If you live here, avoid meeting at your workplace or anywhere your colleagues work. Leave your face off public images. Never photograph anyone, including in a resort, where photography rules are strict anyway.

Lead with the fact that you understand how things work here. If you are a resident, say so and say roughly where. If you are visiting, be clear and modest. You set the terms: the people invited, the number, the limits and the stop signal. With so many visitors, it is sensible to prioritise people who have been active on the site for a while, verify everyone by video and meet each in public. Conventions and the hotel calendar

Las Vegas hosts some of the largest trade shows in the world, including CES in January, and big fight weekends, concerts, Formula 1 in November and major holidays all push room rates up sharply and fill restaurants and lifts. If you are a local planning a meeting, check the convention calendar before choosing a date; a quiet midweek in a slow month can make everything easier and more private. If you are visiting for a convention, expect long days and short nights, and be realistic about what you have time for.

Henderson, Summerlin and life off the Strip

Most residents live in master-planned suburbs where daily life revolves around driving, shopping centres and neighbourhood casinos frequented by locals. Many of those neighbourhood casinos have restaurants and bars that make a reasonable setting for a first drink, away from tourists. Homes in gated communities often require guests to be registered at the gate, which leaves a record, so many locals still prefer a hotel for anything involving several people.

Night shifts and timing

A large part of the workforce keeps unusual hours, with dealers, bartenders, performers and security staff working evenings, nights and weekends. For locals, a Tuesday morning can be the equivalent of a Saturday night elsewhere. Be open about when you are actually available, and do not assume everyone keeps a nine-to-five.
